Around the Web: November 2022

Among the content around the web that we found insightful, challenging, or useful this month:

  1. Our Podcast: We have to plug our own new podcast, People Data Insights. In this new podcast, we explore the people, data, and insights powering innovation in HR today. The first few episodes were released, and we're excited about the conversation to come. If you have suggested topics, please reach out at support@novoinsights.com.

  2. Pay Transparency: It was a big month for Pay Transparency, as NYC's law went into effect and we near the implementation of the California law. This article captures a more popular press view, and this article caught on to some funny business. The continued move to transparency has created some new innovation around how to share, like Pave's new salary band tool

  3. Time Change: We switched the clocks back - all of us with little kids really enjoyed that... and this interactive helped explain why (may be behind a paywall).

  4. Award Season: The shortlist for the 2022 Information is Beatiful Awards was released in late October, and it included an HR dashboard as a nominee. It's visually striking - though not always easy to identify meaning. It's also voting time for the Data Literacy Awards - submit your vote soon!

  5. Remote Work: The Freakonomics podcast (a Novo Insight favorate) did an episode about remote working that is worth knowing. It argues for remote work's benefits and acknowledges the strategy choices firms can make. Expect a People Data Insights podcast on the topic soon as well!
     
  6. Explaining Models: For those on the mathematical side looking to explain your models to others, check out this visual explainer for hierarchical models. You may also want to play with this exploration of basic probability - it's helpful and fun!

  7. Building a People Analytics function: OneModel published a white paper around building a People Analytics function (must provide your information to download). The paper is most useful for larger organizations or those really looking to build a larger Analytics team. Expect some thoughts from Novo Insights in the near future about how to apply these concepts to smaller organizations.
